Hopefully, by the time you read this, a current manual will be available. The manual even contains blank sheets on which to write the parameters of new programs you create. How these sections are used is not under the total control of the user, rather they are configured by algorithms. These are global assignments allowing you to control pre-delay, reverb time or any of the other parameters – there are 44 in all – in real time from a master keyboard or from a sequencer, for example, by recording the controller data onto a mqnual track.

Digitech’s Quad 4, like its predecessor, can treat up to four signals independently, parcelling out its processing power according to your requirements. The final parameter is Envelopment, which controls the stereo spread of the reverb. At the time this generated a good deal of excitement, but since other manufacturers quickly went one better with signal processors that can produce four effects simultaneously, the DSP didn’t look quite so hot anymore.

The maximum delay time varies according to digietch algorithm used, as this determines how much processing power is available for each effect. Fiddling around with my MIDI switching unit caused a MIDI error on the Plus – and on other equipment, too – but the only way to escape from the error was to switch off and on again. In general, however, such an effect would not be applied to any sound in a context where the noise would show up much.

Some even simply flag the error and continue working. Manal found that a good deal of tweaking was often required with this algorithm to remove or minimise unexpected background ringing, and simply to find the best balance of Diffusion and Delay parameters. All effects sections process signals at full bandwidth kHz digitecj, and the result is that even at the top digjtech bottom end of the audio spectrum the processed signal is clear and well defined.

The display will also show changes made to a a parameter’s values from a MIDI controller – a useful function. The Plus is capable of producing four. I do feel that a few areas of the Plus’ implementation could be tidied up, however – although what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts I hate that expression.

However, after delving deep into the facilities of the machine, its own character and unique features became apparent, demonstrating that it is without doubt a worthy addition to the growing range of affordable professional effects processors. These multi-tap facilities were the first things to really impress me on digitehc DSP Plus. Well, EQ is handy to have around but the DSP is primarily an effects unit and I personally wouldn’t worry too much about EQ facilities feel free to worry if you wish.

The Ultimate Reverb algorithm allows huge scope for creating your own reverb effects, but it does take a little time and experimentation to get the best out of it. As it is, any edit you make takes effect immediately. That and the delay section in multi-effects configurations – both with normal and multitap delays – are the strongest of the DSP Plus’s effects capabilities, and in these specific areas give the unit a 1228 edge over its mahual rivals.

This caused me a moment of confusion initially, as I was expecting to find some means of controlling the routing of the effects signal, however it actually makes the unit much easier to use, albeit at the expense of a little flexibility.

Digitech’s RP21D, with its digital output, is aimed at both studio and live use. The Ultimate Reverb If that was the greatest noise source in my setup, I’d be a very happy man.

Sound quality is excellent – although I’ve just suggested that this unit has been designed with the guitarist in mind, it’s definitely a studio quality effects processor.
