Although the narratives are fairly direct, the mood is not. But their reappearance from different angles in different stories indicates they have meaning, even if we are not sure what it is. The high seas, the trail of smoke, the distant grayness, the lifting and falling of the ship, the fear and hope within us, all of it Dr. It is a gem of a book that captures a past, and reminds us to “never forget”. The epithets which have been flung at it include sober, delicate, beautiful, moving, powerful, mysterious, civilised and a hundred others: Paul Bereyter survives the Nazi regime within Germany, for instance. As humans we can imagine ourselves interconnected through vast webs of cultural significance and meaning transcending time, which temporarily can give a sensation of abiding community and oneness, eradicating the solitary self, lifting emigeants above nature into seemingly permanent significance, but this is an illusion.

They are integral parts of the narratives, “talking” across the frames, documenting history, commenting on and reflecting individual memories, but there is no certainty that they actually belong in these stories rather than others.
If one can make that credible, then one can begin to defend writing about these subjects at all.
